The News-We are going to be taking a look at what is in the news, why it is in the news and how news is created

Assignment #7--The Newscast

This assignment has 2 options. You can work in a group of 3-4 people or you can work alone. Make sure you follow all requirements. This will require you to think outside the box!!!

The Group

• Develop and film a 3-5 minute newscast for the Thurston Action News
• Groups can have 3-4 people depending on how your news cast is set up
  • Anchor to introduce the stories
  • A reporter to report them
  • At least 2 stories
  • 1 teaser for a story that will come later in the newscast
  • Must be filmed either with a phone or Mrs. Ferris' camera
  • The news must be exciting, fast paced and school appropriate and Thurston Related
    • Since we will not have any violence, it is important to make your story important and informational. It does not need to be 100% true though
  • You can use props and things as needed
  • If you have questions-ASK

The Individual

• Develop a 22 minute news run down with a minimum of 12 stories for the Thurston Action News
• You must
  • Come up with the story titles
  • Keep it relevant and exciting
  • Make sure all news is school appropriate and somehow related to Thurston
• Then you must create TWO teasers for two of your stories using Voki (see Mrs. Ferris for your password)

Assignment #6

• Using the class Voki create a news introduction--Voki.com/classroom allows you to create talking animations. You can select the person doing the talking, you can write the information for it to read OR you can call in with your cell phone and record your own voice (talk to Mrs. Ferris before you do this).
• You must include:
  • Your name (introduce yourself)
  • The name of your newscast
  • The date
  • An overview of tonight's top stories (you must have at least 3)
  • A brief top story
• You only have 60 seconds in your Voki
• You news anchor should look professional (remember this is a news cast).
• All your information must be school appropriate
• The computers DO NOT have speakers
  • If you want to listen to your Voki you will need headphones OR come see Mrs. Ferris and you can hear it from her computer
• These will be available for the class to view on the Voki lesson site

Assignment #5

• You are going to take the available news stories that I have given you and create a rundown of the order they will run
• Make sure to pay attention to the total time (22 minutes)
• You will need to put in where you want the commercials to play (as in between what stories)
• You can do this on the computer or on paper
• Make sure to read all directions.
• Remember, there are 60 seconds in a minute

Assignment #4--Writing a News Story

• Write a News Story (can be fictional) using the elements covered in the vocab at the beginning of class
  • Must have:Can be written on lined paper or typed
    • A HEADLINE
    • A Byline
    • A picture
    • A caption
    • No less than 10 sentences
    • One quote (can be made up)
    • Must be school appropriate
  • 
    
  • Picture can be drawn (stick figures are fine), from a magazine (in the drawer) or from online
  • Due at the end of class.
    • If done on the computer-Email
    • If written--Turn in to Mrs. Ferris as you leave
    • NO PRINTING of anything

Assignment #3--Analyzing the News

• Get a News Analysis Sheet from the counter
• Choose a news article from a PRINT NEWS site (not a video news site)
  • Articles must be at least 6 paragraphs long
• Use the article to fill in the Analysis Sheet
• Turn it in with your name on it when it is complete

Assignment #2--Front Page News Project

• Visit Newseum and view the Papers from TODAY
• Check out the Front Pages from around the country
• Pick 8 news papers from DIFFERENT States
• Copy the pages into a Word or PowerPoint
• Answer the following questions for each front page
  1. What paper did you choose? (should be on top of the slide with the image)What City/State were they each from (should be on top of the slide with the image)
  2. What headlines were used? (make sure to list the main headline from EACH PAPER you selected)
  3. What pictures or graphics were shown?
  4. What stood out to YOU the most

1. Once you are done with your 8, create a new slide/page and answer these questions
   • How were the stories different from the different papers/states?
   • What stories were the same through the different papers?
   • What emotions were shown? What tone was present in the front pages (positive, negative, scary)
   • Do you think any of this stories will be remembered in 10 years? Which ones? Why?
